Gift-wrapped stuff doesn't get anyone hooked

Oh my dear founder…

The behind-the-scenes of our crowdfunding video is truly awful 🤮 And we published it anyway.

Half a day of shooting all together, an editing sprint done in record time, and the play2match campaign was live. A few days later we had already raised €160,000.

Why ugly works

Gift-wrapped stuff makes you look cool, but it doesn't get people hooked. What hooks people is seeing that behind it there's a group of real people who flub a line and laugh about it.

For me, being genuine, real and transparent isn't a tone of voice you decide in a meeting. It's the only way I know to get someone to choose you.

My why

I was born into sport, in Basket City 🏀 I grew up hoping to become good. Then I gave up and tried to become the Kobe of my neighbourhood (very poor results, I'll tell you right now).

But sport has shaped a big part of my life: it gave me friends, memories, experiences, growth and self-awareness. Getting to grow a project in exactly this world today gets me hyped like crazyyy. And when something really gets you hyped, you don't need to gift-wrap it: it shows.

FAQ

What is “Gift-wrapped stuff doesn't get anyone hooked” about?

The behind-the-scenes of our crowdfunding video is awful. We published it anyway, because people get hooked on real things, not perfect ones. It is an entry in the Founder's Diary by Simone Tabellini, 11 June 2026.

What does Simone take away from it?

A real behind-the-scenes convinces more than a perfect video. Transparency isn't a tone of voice, it's a way of working. If the project really gets you hyped, you don't need to dress it up: it shows.
