Bologna was missing a place to meet up without the hype

About fifty people, no stage, a pitch done with a random object. How the Bologna Startup Network was born and what it taught us.

Oh my dear founder…

You have no idea what happened that week. About fifty people, between founders, incubators, accelerators, innovation professionals and a few investors (few but good 😅), got together at The Social Hub to chat and swap feedback.

Super easy, unstructured, no hype, nobody hyped right off the roof tiles, as we say in Bolo. Someone even pitched with an unconventional object, because the pitch has to be disruptive too 🤣

The community is there, it just needs bringing together

In May we did it again at MUG, with an even simpler format. No pitches, no panels: classic networking and a two-minute Open Mic to say who you are, what you do and what project you're working on, so it's easier to find the right people afterwards. Pizza and drinks paid for, so people actually stick around.

The Bologna startup community exists. It's not rock solid yet, but it's there. Our job isn't to invent it, it's to give it a place to meet.

What we took home

After the May meetup the network responded big time, and reading the posts from the people who were there was the best part. The next one? Maybe more structured, maybe with a few more partners, we don't know. For sure we'll do it again, because Bolo needs moments like these.

All the meetups, the numbers and who was there are on the Bologna Startup Network page.

FAQ

What is “Bologna was missing a place to meet up without the hype” about?

About fifty people, no stage, a pitch done with a random object. How the Bologna Startup Network was born and what it taught us. It is an entry in the Founder's Diary by Simone Tabellini, March–June 2026.

What does Simone take away from it?

Take away the stage and people start talking to each other. Two minutes each is enough to help the right people find each other. A community exists before you organise it: the job is to give it a place.
